How DRAMA can help you live a better life
In this month of February, JSTO and eighth grader, Amrik Krishnakumar, describes the lessons that acting teaches you, and how learning about theatre provides valuable life skills.
What does drama do for us? Acting, singing, dancing; why do we need it? Drama may seem like it has no purpose, but don’t be fooled behind the mask it’s hidden by. Drama has been around for ages not because it’s entertainment. It’s here because of the enjoyment spread from having it. There's just so much more to learn!
5 skills I have learned from drama:
5 skills I have learned from drama:
1) Teamwork
I would think that teamwork is an incredibly important skill that is key to success in the future. Drama teaches us how to work together and get through multiple different problems, such as problems on stage and behind the scenes! It also taught me to become a better leader, which helped me a lot in school whenever I worked in small groups. For instance, my teamwork skills helped me get my peers to stay on task in group work.
2) Responsibility
Responsibility comes from being given tasks that require you to do more. In drama, we struggle with time management, memorizing lines, and the culpability of performing the given so that the whole performance goes down smoothly. These are all are parts of responsibility that can be found in drama.
3) Patience
Everyone knows the quote patience is key. We learn patience through the rigorous tasks we have to finish before we have fun. The worst part is having to wait for the show to go on! We all struggle with waiting in lines and to know information. Drama teaches us to just relax and take one day at a time and then drama season just flies by!
4) Perseverance
Drama is a lot of fun, but also requires you to work hard. Taking part of the drama community gives a you a major life role. You have to work just as hard in the actual production as compared to the auditions; everyone works hard before auditions.
5) How to constructively
have Fun!
Drama is not only a lot of fun, but it becomes a family. You build confidence, improve your personality, speak loudly, reach out to others without inhibition, and a whole lot of amazing other things. You also have the ability to make new friends and become part of a lifetime community.
I remember when I was first introduced to drama, I was in 4th grade, terrified of the thought of it. Auditions were the scariest thing on the planet at that time. Drama taught me to get over my fear and be myself. Plus, the skills I learned from drama helped me know how to react and cooperate. I feel drama is a lot of fun and a great responsibility. It forces us to keep track of time and to be careful, and our reward is enjoyment!
Theatre may be a form of art, but I feel our art tends to copy our lives, making theatre even more appealing.
